FIDDLERS! Live Music in Roxbury

The Roxbury Arts Group is pleased to present an afternoon of music, the 32nd annual Fiddlers! On October 12th, 2025, from 3pm-7pm, experience timeless rhythms and dynamic performances from old time music to New England folk. Richie and Rosie is an americana group from Trumansburg, NY. Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton are a dynamic duo. As two musicians in two very different parts of life, Richie and Rosie are proof of two things: the power and magic of two people making music, and that the universal messages that lie within their songs will remain timeless.

Harry Bolick, aka the Mississippi Fiddler, is somewhat of a national treasure in that he is one of a handful of fiddlers keeping
this tradition alive. The genius of this musician is not just his skill with a fiddle but
his pursuit of his roots and musical traditions in his home state Mississippi. In addition to being a performer, he is an author of  two Mississippi fiddle tradition books, published by The University Press of Mississippi which transcribe and document almost every known tune from the state.

Five Cent Fireballs is an alt-bluegrass ensemble based in Charlottesville, VA. Malia Furtado (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Clara George (guitar, keyboards, Scruggs-style banjo, vocals), and Emma McDowell (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, clawhammer banjo, vocals) bring together their own musical styles to create a perfect union of the alternative and bluegrass worlds. Displaying instrumental virtuosity with stunning three-part harmonies, their repertoire includes original songs as well as traditional bluegrass and Americana covers.

Ice Harvest Festival at Hanford Mills Museum 2025

On January 25th, from 10am-3pm, Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith, NY, hosts the region’s coolest tradition: the annual Ice Harvest Festival! This fun, family-friendly event features a variety of indoor and outdoor activities that celebrate the old rural tradition of ice harvesting

Ice harvests were once an essential part of winter in rural communities. Before there was refrigeration, ice was needed to preserve agricultural products and to keep food cold in the warmer months. At the Ice Harvest Festival, visitors will be able to get a hands-on look back at the tradition. Using historic tools and techniques, they can cut and maneuver blocks of ice from the Mill Pond, and then transport the blocks to the ice house by sled.

FLEISCHMANNS

A photo with black eyed Susans in front of a green leafy bush with a white octagonal gazebo in the background. The word "Fleischmanns" is in white on top of the image.

Fleischmanns is a quaint town with a rich history nestled in the heart of the Catskills. The two and a half hour drive from New York City flies by as you enter the area’s gorgeous scenery. When traveling west on Route 28, Fleischmanns is the first town in the Great Western Catskills. You will find new restaurants, an art gallery, easy dining, and peace and quiet.

The history of tourism in the area dates back to the late 1800s when a passenger train arrived in town. By 1940, the town was a prominent tourist destination with the local population of 400 rising to 10,000 by the Fourth of July. The advent of cars and air travel had a massive effect on tourism in the area, and many hotels and homes fell into disrepair. Since these times, Fleischmanns has become a second homeowner paradise, with new shops and eateries and old houses being renovated by those eager to relax in the pure country air.

Stay at the Breezy Hill Inn if you are an electric car owner. Their property is stunning, and they have a Level 2 charger available to guests! We cannot wait for you to visit Fleischmanns for outdoor activities, art, dining, and relaxation in the calm and quiet of the Catskill Mountains.

Bovina Farm Day 2025

Bovina Farm Day is taking place this year on Sunday, Augst 31st, 2025, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm! This big one-day festival is one of the most magical events for young kids. There is a massive hay bale playground with a slide, a maze, and a corn pit. Kids can run around for hours and then settle into a hayride to enjoy the expansive views of the valley.

Hosted by Farming Bovina, a non-profit organization, this annual celebration of the area’s rich agricultural traditions has had a huge comeback the past two years and promises to be another amazing event this year. The organization is thrilled to continue this beloved event on Crescent Valley Road in Bovina this Labor Day weekend.

Bovina Farm Day is an opportunity for you to meet the farmers, enjoy local food and discover products made in the area. Farming Bovina welcomes everyone to experience a variety of animals and get the kids involved with all the activities of the day including vintage tractor displays, antique engine demonstrations, hayrides, treasure hunts, and butter and maple candy activities.

Guests are also encouraged to enter the annual Best Apple Pie and Apple Dessert Contests as well as the Scarecrow Contest. The organization will provide the stake, cross-arms, and hay, while those who enter the contest will supply the creativity and sheer determination to outshine the other scarecrows on the field.

The price of admission for this day of family fun is $5.00 per person, with children under 12 free. This event is made possible with the generous support of Pure Catskills, an economic initiative of the Watershed Agriculture Council with funding from NYC DEP and a number of other generous sponsors.

Where’s Waldo Hiding in Delhi, NY?

The beautiful village of Delhi, NY, will have kids and families searching local shops with one question on their minds, “Where’s Waldo?” The Lost Bookshop was selected by Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association to host the family-friendly scavenger hunt this July. Out of only 300 bookstores selected to participate, we are so delighted that the Where’s Waldo character will be hiding in the small rural town of Delhi, NY! A cut-out of Waldo will be hidden, with his red-and-white-striped shirt and black glasses, in twenty-five local businesses.

To participate in this special event taking place throughout July, people can simply pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Delhi!” stamp card at any of the participating stores. Searchers get their cards stamped or signed by the participating shop when they spot the miniature Waldo.  Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers to enter into a grand prize drawing for Waldo books and other prizes. All participants are welcome to attend the celebration party at The Lost Bookshop on July 31st.

Visit Delhi, NY, this July to experience the exciting scavenger hunt! Follow The Lost Bookshop on Facebook and Instagram for updates.

Catch a Game This Coming Season

Picture this– a cloudless blue sky, green grass, the smell of a warm summer breeze, and base ball players catching the ball with bare hands. Warm weather is just around the corner and so is Vintage Base Ball. Sporting three fantastic teams, Delaware County is home to the Bovina Dairymen, the Delhi Polecats and the Fleischmanns Mountain Athletic Club (M.A.C.). Stepping back in time, three local teams pay tribute to the history of baseball by donning the uniform, rules and baseball philosophy of the 19th Century.

What is vintage base ball? Vintage base ball (yes, in the 19th century it was two words!) is an ode to the way base ball was played in the 1800s, when rules were changing yearly and only the catcher wore a mitt. Most vintage base ball teams play by a set of rules from a specific year, the Bovina Dairymen playing by the rules of 1895. Carrying on a long legacy of base ball, the Fleischmanns MAC were originally founded by Max and Julius Fleischmann in 1895. The team played until 1914 and was resurrected in true vintage base ball fashion in 2007. The game is competitive and fun, focused on bringing the community together for an exciting afternoon!

The teams are preparing and the schedule is here! But it isn’t vintage base ball without a lot of community support. Feel free to pack a picnic, grab your friends, sip something refreshing and cheer on your favorite team. Start planning your adventure to participate in this vibrant tradition!

Hit the Road with the 7th Annual Catskill Conquest Rally!

In 1903, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers sponsored an 800-mile endurance run from Weehawken, NJ to Pittsburgh, PA. Thirty-four competing automobiles departed on October 7, 1903 and traveled up the Hudson Valley and then through the Catskill Mountains. Reaching Delhi on the second day in a driving rain, they continued on through Franklin and then to Binghamton and beyond.

Since 2017, drivers have been commemorating this historic event with a tradition of their own, The Annual Catskill Conquest Rally! This year’s event takes place on Saturday, September 20th, and starts at the Catskill Visitor Center in Mount Tremper, NY, and ends at the Hanford Mills Museum.

The NYC Footy League has hundreds of players that meet up at weekly games, in NYC and surrounding boroughs, with skill levels ranging from beginner to expert. It’s a league centering community with a healthy and fun dose of competition.

The Footy Fest is an opportunity for league members to pick up their cleats from their NYC apartment and lace them up in the Catskill Mountains. Individuals and groups (located in the NYC area and elsewhere) are welcome to participate in the Footy Fest Tournament for a chance to win the championship. Enjoy drinks and community all day with a celebration of food and refreshments upon the culmination of the tournament.

Major! (dir. Annalise Ophelian, 2016) follows the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a 73-year-old Black transgender woman who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years. Miss Major’s personal story and activism for transgender civil rights, from mobile outreach and AIDS prevention to fighting the prison industrial complex, intersects LGBT struggles for justice and equality from the 1960s to today. With LGBT rights currently being debated across the country, Miss Major’s life is a testament to the fierce survivalism and everyday concerns of transgender women of color, who so often live in the margin of the already marginalized. See the trailer here.

Women and the Arts

Delaware County is home to some fantastic women artists and women who run organizations that bring art to the community. From those programming for children, running art studio tours and much more, we are highlighting some of the wonderful women artists of the Great Western Catskills.

We asked these artists a few questions to get a better understanding of the arts community in Delaware County and how these women have contributed to it. Here is what they had to say:

Jayne Parker– Owner, Hawk + Hive
“We opened our gallery in 2021, with the intention of creating a gathering place for creative people and those interested in the arts in Delaware County and the Catskill region. We endeavor to show local artists as much as possible, alongside established artists from further afield. We work hard to collaborate with and help promote other creative and entertainment businesses in our area. We run the Andes Community instagram account. Our gallery and art show receptions are open to the general public and are free to all.”

Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes– Artist, tapestry weaver and recent coordinator for AMR Artists Open Studio Tour
“I am a tapestry weaver, using locally sourced Shetland wools that I dye and hand spin.  Consider tapestry weaving as ‘drawing in wool’. My involvement in the arts in Delaware County comes from both entering and being invited to participate in art exhibits, and in grant writing and coordinating arts programs  for the Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild and AMR ARTISTS, INC. As the coordinator for AMR ARTISTS, INC.’s annual Open Studios Tour and for Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild’s summer CRAFTS FOR KIDS at Pakatakan Farmers’ Market, I saw many visitors (both first timers and repeats) and second home owners very appreciative of seeing art being made in an artist’s studio and of providing youth with hands on creativity experiences.”

AMR Artists, Inc hosts an Annual Open Studios Tour that showcases the work and studios of over 30 local artists in Delaware County. With a thorough studio map and directions, patrons can take themselves on a self-guided tour through-out the Great Western Catskills.

Christina Hunt Wood photo by Adrianna Newell

Christina Hunt Wood– Artist and organizer with Get Woke! Catskills, Living Archives Project and Bushel Collective
“I am a founding member and the manager of Get Woke! Catskills, which is an organization founded in 2017 that uses the arts as a vehicle for conversations about race and identity. In my role, I organize film screenings, book discussion groups, and artist talks. Most recently, I produced a podcast called ‘From Here’ which profiles members of our creative community with a focus on people from historically underrepresented groups.”

“I am also the Lead Artist for the Living Archive Project, which is funded by a Creatives Rebuild New York Grant. I organize and teach workshops, conduct interviews, and other programs that focus on documenting the lived experiences of people in the Northern Catskills. And I’m a Bushel Collective member…many hats.”

“I grew up in this area. I went to high school just over the Delaware County border in Jefferson. I think my first group show was probably the one for high school kids at the Cyr Center at the Rexmere (Stamford) in the early 90s.”

“In my art practice, I focus on themes around everyday expressions of power and ways the status quo is maintained using various cultural tools. The theme overrides formal medium for me, so I use whatever makes sense to communicate the ideas I’m trying to convey. Currently, I’m using photography, video, and beer cans in my work. The cans (‘road soda’ litter) are found in ditches throughout rural Upstate NY and are deconstructed and reimagined into material for my art. The cans act as evidence of the collective impact of many small aggressions on the land. They are a metaphor for microaggressions in general.”

Caroline Fay–  Artist, teacher and owner of Big Little Art Studio
“I am a Walton based artist from Ireland. I’m trained in Fine Art from DIT in Dublin and studied painting at the Art Students League of New York…I paint predominately in oils but also work in other media from large scale murals to small lino prints.”

“As well as being an artist, I own and operate a studio in Walton called BLAS (aka Big Little Art Studio). Originally an old general store, the studio is a mixed use space; my own personal painting studio, a gallery and a welcoming workshop space where people can unleash their creativity while connecting with other art loving folk..”

“Both on a professional artistic level and on a community level, I am passionate about encouraging people to take an active role by enhancing the arts in Walton and Delaware County. One way I can do this is by creating opportunities for people to engage in creative processes and events through workshops, exhibitions, community murals and most importantly, to me, through my art!”

A family tradition begun in the 1920’s of making maple products continues into its fourth generation here in Bovina. Margaretville Cemetery Tour Brings History to Life

Meet 15 people from the past on a one-hour guided walk through Margaretville Cemetery.

The Historical Society of the Town of Middletown has announced the cast for its 8th Living History Cemetery Tour to be held July 10, 2021 at Margaretville Cemetery.

A total of 15 people will appear in this year’s event, which will be produced with Covid precautions, including audience distancing and mask wearing by everyone except performers.

Groups of tour goers will be led by costumed guides through the cemetery to hear the stories of ten men and women who rest there. Tours will depart every 20 minutes between 4 and 6 p.m. Tour time reservations are required; details to be announced.

This year’s cast features many players who are new to the event, as well as a couple of veterans.

John Bernhardt, who has performed in every one of the tours, will play George Gilbert alongside Alice Zigelis as his wife Sarah. The pair will recount their very public divorce, and much quieter reconciliation.

Burr Hubbell as veterinarian Reuben Smith will tell the story of his son’s heroism while Air Force pilot Thomas Kingsley Smith (Kevin Hubbell) stands silently at ease. The efforts of Hungarian immigrant Esther Dobsa to keep her family together on the farm after her husband’s early death will be shared by Darlene DeMaille.

Nineteenth-century lamplighter Leslie Dumond will be portrayed by Ward Stevenson. Marge Helenchild will appear as Delaware County’s first female attorney, Mabel Fenton.

The tour audience will hear about the scandalous fall from grace of Anti-Rent War hero Edward O’Connor, as recounted by his nephew, R. David Scott, played by Brett Barry. And Mike Riley as Irishman Sam Hunter will describe his fruitless search for a missing Civil War comrade.

Among the at-large players will be a pair of devoted sisters, Lucy and Mary Waterman (Robin Williams and Julie Ford) who converse in sign language; antebellum lady Deborah Carpenter Landon (Emily Vieyra-Haley), blacksmith Ebenezer Laidlaw (Howie Futterman) and a pair of Victorian picnickers played by John Exter and Lisbeth Furman.

Iris Mead, Jo Maender and Aurora Riley will serve as costumed tour guides. Scriptwriters are Erwin Karl, John Jacobson, Anne Saxon-Hersh, Terry Bradshaw, Mary Barile, Marilyn Kaltenborn and Diane Galusha.

The cost of admission for the tour is $20; children under 15 free. Reservations required. Call 845-586-4736 to reserve a tour time. Rain date July 11.

If you would like to help as a site volunteer, call Diane Galusha, 845-586-4973, or contact HSM at history@catskill.net.

West Kortright Centre Barn Tour 2019

One of the greatest ways to experience the Great Western Catskills is to get an insider glimpse of the gardens, barns and homes of Delaware County. Each year, The West Kortright Centre hosts a couple of fundraiser events that provide that perfect level of access. We are thrilled to announce that their next tour is coming up on Sunday, September 29th.

The West Kortright Centre will hold its third annual Barn Tour fundraiser from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on that Sunday.  This year’s tour will guide visitors through spectacular landscapes in the Walton area to explore eight remarkable examples of agricultural architectural history.

West Kortirght Center Historic Barn Tour

Begin the tour at an immaculately restored three-story barn at 245 Budine Road, Walton. Travel back in time to a barn built in the early 20th century (on land settled by a Revolutionary War soldier and prisoner of war in 1808). Stop in for delicious ‘barn dance’ soup, cooked over a wood fire, at a barn raised just fifteen years ago that houses a unique collection of antique farming implements. Carry on through Walton’s bucolic hills to several ramp-style barns and one of the last working dairy farms in the region (where dozens of varieties of pumpkins and squash are for sale). Each barn on the tour has been carefully maintained by its present owner and is a testament to the skill and creativity of its builders.

All visitors must begin the tour between 11AM–1PM and end by 4PM; it will be held rain or shine.

Tickets for this event are $20 in advance or $23 at the first barn, to benefit The West Kortright Centre’s arts and community programs. For tickets and more information, call (607) 278-5454, or visit westkc.org.

Fiddlers! 25th Anniversary

The Roxbury Arts Group presents: “Fiddlers! 25th Anniversary,” an autumn tradition in the Catskills, on Sunday October 7th from 12:00p.m.-7:00p.m. The first snap of autumn, the vibrant colors on the mountainside, and the scent of harvest means its time for fiddling, square dancing, fine homemade food, and world renowned folk musicians in Hilt & Stella Kelly Hall at the Roxbury Arts Center. This is a very special year and a wonderful way to conclude our Columbus Day Weekend celebrations as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the beloved FIDDLERS! event. Bovina “Drive In”

According to the 2010 census, the small town of Bovina had 633 people living there. The small population might be one of the reasons people are always so surprised when you tell them exactly how many great events happen there each year. Members of the community pull together to host a variety of events and one of the favorites is the Bovina “Drive-In” which starts again on August 12th.

Grab  your lawn chair and blankets, pack a picnic and enjoy a family friend movie under the Catskill Mountain stars. The fun starts at sunset each Sunday. The films will be screened across form Brushland Eating House which is located at 1927 Co Rd 6, Bovina Center, NY 13740.

Ask a Local-Liz Callahan, Hanford Mills Museum

Liz Callahan is the Executive Director of Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith, New York.

The mill’s authentic and extensively documented site inspires the museum’s unique interpretation and activities. The museum believes that the operation of the mill site is a powerful experience that can be balanced with careful preservation. There are valuable lessons to be learned from agrarian communities.

Hanford Mills Museum features an authentic water- and steam-powered Sawmill with a 1926 Fitz Overshot Waterwheel, restored 19th century water turbine, steam power plant, and vintage woodworking machines. Visit their website to learn about their programming and special events.
