Farm Fresh Holiday Flavors

From rolling mountain farms to cozy village markets, Delaware County offers the kind of farm-fresh flavors that make holiday gatherings shine. Whether you’re setting out a festive cheese board, glazing vegetables with golden maple syrup, or sweetening your tea with local honey, the Great Western Catskills are filled with local treasures ready to bring warmth and authenticity to your table.

Start your holiday entertaining with handcrafted cheeses from across the county. At Two Stones Farm Store & Creamery in Fleischmanns, you’ll find small-batch cheeses made from happy Catskills cows, perfect for a rustic appetizer board or brunch spread. In Andes, Dirty Girl Farm is a local favorite for creamy, tangy goat cheeses and milk made with care and creativity. And over in Bloomville, Byebrook Farm crafts beautifully aged Gouda that pairs perfectly with apples, honey, or a splash of local cider.

Purchase items directly at their farm stores, or pick up selections at the year-round Delhi Farmers’ Market (every Wednesday), Hymer’s Farm Market in Delhi, and the Humdinger Farm Store in Bloomville. Up until the end of November, you can purchase farm fresh items from the Pakatakan Farmers’ Market in Halcottsville and the Covered Bridge Farm Market in Unadilla.

The sweet scent of maple syrup drifting through the kitchen is pure holiday comfort. In Delancey, Dar-View Maple produces small-batch syrup that’s as rich as it is pure. It is ideal for glazing roasted carrots, drizzling over desserts, or gifting in its beautifully bottled form. The Hubbell Family Farm in Margaretville, carries on a history of Catskills farming since 1848 with their own maple syrup, apple cider, and meat products available in their charming country store. And don’t miss Tree Juice Maple Syrup in Arkville, whose wood-fired syrup adds a smoky sweetness to breakfast, baking, and even cocktails.

Pick up maple syrup directly from these producers or at local retailers like the Humdinger Farm Store and Good Cheap Food.

Add a touch of Catskills sunshine to your holiday cooking with locally made honey. Honey Bee Herbs in Margaretville captures pure mountain honey in every golden jar, while The Rogers Ranch in Hamden offers raw, small-batch honey perfect for tea, baked goods, or cheese pairings. Both make lovely stocking stuffers or hostess gifts.

Stock your shelves, and your gift baskets, with small-batch pantry staples and treats. First Bloom Corner Store in Bloomville creates jams and preserves that capture the brightness of summer fruit, while Masonville General Store & Crescent Wrench Café in Masonville is a charming spot for local baked goods, honey, and handmade preserves. Pair a jar of jam with a local cheese and a bottle of maple syrup, and you’ve got a perfect Catskills-inspired gift. For something soothing, stop by Tay Tea in Delhi for artisanal tea blends that pair beautifully with local honey.

This holiday season, fill your table with the flavors of Delaware County. Each bite tells a story of the mountains, small farms, and the people who pour their hearts into every product. It’s not just about what’s on the table, it’s about where it came from. Discover even more local farms, markets, and makers at greatwesterncatskills.com/shops and bring the taste of Delaware County home for the holidays!

Springtime Culinary

There is no way to miss the agricultural splendor of Delaware County. Whether in town while the Delhi Farmers’ Market is in full swing or driving through the winding foothills of the Catskills, the farming culture of the area is evident. You will find barns and farm fields, farm stands selling fresh items, and restaurants sourcing products directly from the farmers.

There are ten farmers’ markets that take place throughout the summer with a few of them lasting year-round or beginning in the spring. At the markets you will find fresh fruits and vegetables, pasture raised meat, herbal tinctures and dried herbs, homemade pies, fresh baked bread and pastries, and many other locally produced items. The Delhi Farmers’ Market is year-round on Wednesdays from 10am-2pm. It moves outside to Courthouse Square in Delhi, NY, in May. The Pakatakan Farmers Markets takes place on Saturdays from 9am-1pm, and begins on May 17th.

Farm stands are a great place to shop local items if you are looking for a few items on your way home or on your way to a weekend retreat. Visit ByeBrook Farm and Humdinger Farm Stores in Bloomville, Burn Ayr in Delhi, and Covered Bridge Farm Market in Unadilla for items direct from the farmers. Often operating on the honesty policy, these farm stands have their doors open with farm fresh eggs, meat, pies, cheese, and other items depending on the location. Make sure to bring cash!

Restaurants in Delaware County do their best to source as much as they can from local farms. Some restaurants that go above and beyond to source locally are Hollow and EightyMain in Delhi, Hamden Inn & Lounge in Hamden, Brushland Eating House and Bovina Farm and Fermentory in Bovina, The Old Schoolhouse Inn in Downsville and Cafe Mornings in Arkville. Many other restaurants in the area also source locally. Browse all restaurants here.

Women Beverage Makers

The Great Western Catskills has beautiful hills, sprawling fields and, perhaps unsuspectingly, an abundance of amazing women beverage makers. The fertile (and yes, rocky) soil allows for beautiful orchards and farms for grains, apples, hops and all things needed to make a wide variety of libations. These women are smart, innovative and dedicated to their craft and we reap the benefit by having some of the most incredible cider, beer and spirits in the world produced right here in Delaware County.  In honor of International Women’s Day,  we want to shine light on some talented women working hard in The Great Western Catskills.

Irene Hussey, Wayside Cider
Irene Hussey is the owner and producer of Wayside Cider in Andes, NY. Irene started making cider in her family’s garage, focusing on the wild apples of Delaware County. Her operation is a bit larger now, with a tasting room and production facility in the heart of Andes, but she still focuses on local, wild trees. Irene is making modern American ciders that draw on the history and topography of the Great Western Catskills. She aims to preserve the past while embracing modern production metaphors to produce cider unique to this region.

Elizabeth Starks, Bovina Farm & Fermentory
Elizabeth Starks, of Bovina Farm and Fermentory studied at Cornell University with a focus on agriculture and sustainability. Through traveling and studying abroad, Elizabeth was inspired by tavern-like establishments run out of people’s homes. It was with this idea that Bovina Farm and Fermentory was born. They offer farm-to-table meals and a small selection of farm brewed beer. The beer is made from all NYS-grown grains and mountain spring water. For a lovely meal paired with crisp and delicious beer, pay Elizabeth a visit at Bovina Farm and Fermentory.

Jennifer ClarkEminence Road Farm Winery
Jennifer Clark and partner, Andrew Scott, are the proprietors of Eminence Road Farm Winery. Their initial interest in wine quickly developed into an obsession which led them from making really small batches of wine to their full on wine making operation in Long Eddy, NY. Coming from a home-winemaker background, with no formal training or winery experience, Eminence Road has developed a self-taught winemaking methodology based on low-intervention, patience and faith in the natural processes of fermentation. The goal is to make rustic, textured country wines that shine bright on the dinner table. To that end, they let wine ferment at its own pace and get it into the bottle without extraneous additives or processing. To try these truly delicious and unique wines, purchase a bottle or have it alongside dinner at a few of the places listed below.

Supporting Businesses in Delaware County

During these challenging times, we at the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce are going to do whatever we can to promote the businesses that are still able to offer our their services to the area.

We have removed all events through June in accordance with what I LOVE NEW YORK is doing on their site.

Sis Boom Yum is a new website that will be offering updated information on what restaurants and shops are open in Delaware County. This site will keep people up to date on where they can get get take-out, delivery and special orders. This is done in association with Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, The MARK Project and many individuals providing updated information and content daily.

Along with other regional entities including the Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship, Delaware County Cornell Cooperative Extension, Watershed Ag Council, Pure Catskills, and the Food and Health Network of South Central NY , the Great Western Catskills and Delaware County Chamber of Commerce are encouraging local food businesses (farms, farm businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, liquor stores, and others) to use this shared directory to get your information out to the community.

The ripeCommunity Directory allows food businesses to create a listing for themselves and update food availability in real time, giving consumers a cost-free, one source, way to access accurate information about food options, hours of operations, ordering instructions, and food safety precautions. Community members can also use this platform to understand donation support options, regardless of a business’ operational status.

Instructions for food businesses and consumers can be found by clicking the logo below. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact ripecommunity@ripe.io

We are continuing to keep our social channels updated to help share offers from local businesses.

If there is anything that we can do to support your business, please let us know by reaching out to tourism@delawarecounty.org.

These are incredibly trying times but tourism will be one of the businesses that leads the inevitable recovery of this great Country, this incredible state and our beloved Delaware County.

West Kortright Centre Barn Tour 2019

One of the greatest ways to experience the Great Western Catskills is to get an insider glimpse of the gardens, barns and homes of Delaware County. Each year, The West Kortright Centre hosts a couple of fundraiser events that provide that perfect level of access. We are thrilled to announce that their next tour is coming up on Sunday, September 29th.

The West Kortright Centre will hold its third annual Barn Tour fundraiser from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on that Sunday.  This year’s tour will guide visitors through spectacular landscapes in the Walton area to explore eight remarkable examples of agricultural architectural history.

West Kortirght Center Historic Barn Tour

Begin the tour at an immaculately restored three-story barn at 245 Budine Road, Walton. Travel back in time to a barn built in the early 20th century (on land settled by a Revolutionary War soldier and prisoner of war in 1808). Stop in for delicious ‘barn dance’ soup, cooked over a wood fire, at a barn raised just fifteen years ago that houses a unique collection of antique farming implements. Carry on through Walton’s bucolic hills to several ramp-style barns and one of the last working dairy farms in the region (where dozens of varieties of pumpkins and squash are for sale). Each barn on the tour has been carefully maintained by its present owner and is a testament to the skill and creativity of its builders.

All visitors must begin the tour between 11AM–1PM and end by 4PM; it will be held rain or shine.

Tickets for this event are $20 in advance or $23 at the first barn, to benefit The West Kortright Centre’s arts and community programs. For tickets and more information, call (607) 278-5454, or visit westkc.org.

A special program at the Historical Society of the Town of Middletown will delve into the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps here in the Catskills.   There will be a nature walk to explore this CCC legacy immediately following the talk.
In Kelly Corners, watch a complex network of belts and pulleys power a sawmill in a 150-year-old barn at Hubbell Family Farm.  Visit the historic farm as well.  Then, visit the Pakatakan Farmers Market housed in the iconic Kelly Brothers Round Barn.
Climb the stairs of the Roxbury Methodist Church tower to see (and hear!) a venerable clock chime the hour.   Also new this year, the Old School Baptist Meeting House in the hills above Roxbury will be open for a visit.

Bring Delaware County To Your Dinner Table This Thanksgiving

We are quickly approaching the Thanksgiving Holiday, and if you’ve had time to think about planning your holiday meals with friends and loved ones this season, have you considered sourcing your ingredients from one of our local farms in the Great Western Catskills? Our local producers have kicked it into high gear, even after a difficult and wet summer, to make sure that we have access to some of the best quality agricultural goods our region has to offer.

Stone & Thistle Farm raises grass fed lamb, goat, pork, beef, and poultry on the family farm located in a lush quiet valley in the beautiful town of East Meredith, NY.  Stone & Thistle Farm’s livestock and poultry are raised on pastures most of the year. The dairy goats, pigs, and poultry are fed minimal amounts of local grains. No additives, hormones, antibiotics or drugs are used to raise naturally healthy, farm-fresh meat and eggs.

This holiday season, Stone & Thistle Farm is happily taking pre-orders for Thanksgiving Turkeys! The birds will weigh between 14 and 25 lbs each, and are priced at $4.95 / lb. You can place a $20 deposit that reserves you a bird this season, and can pick up your turkey  at the Pakatakan Farmers Market in Holvottsville, NY on November 17th, or make arrangements for picking up the turkey at the Farm. For more information about placing your deposit, you can contact the farm by phone 607-278-5800, or by email at warren@stoneandthistlefarm.com. As Tom from Stone & Thistle would say, “Thanksgiving without a Stone & Thistle Farm Turkey is just another Thursday!”

Located in the western Catskill mountains in the town of Meredith is Greenane Farms, another family operation that raises raising grass-fed Angus cattle, heritage pigs, chicken, quail, goats, and of course, turkeys! They also operate a full service farm to table Mexican restaurant in the hamlet of Meridale, NY, serving gourmet Mexican cuisine sourcing ingredients directly from their farm.

Greenane Farms will be taking orders for their Thanksgiving Turkeys that are raised and processed right on the farm. Their pasture raised turkeys weigh between 14 to 30 pounds, and are priced at $4.50 per pound. Please email patrick@greenanefarms or call 607-746-8878 with your order. Quantities limited, first come first serve!

Catskills Regional Harvest in Andes, NY was created to bring the bounty and talent of Catskills farmers, producers , and artists to the hands of fellow locals. This year, Catskills Regional Harvest in partnership with Delaware County farms, is pleased to you prepare your entire Thanksgiving feast this year! That’s right, every ingredient for your meal, even right down to the deserts!

Catskills Regional Harvest will be offering  20-30 lbs turkeys priced at $6.00 / lb, from Twin Ponds Farm of Bloomville, New York, and 20 pound turkeys priced at $7 / lb from Paradise in Disguise Hobby Farm Delhi NY,  and Mandy’s in East Meredith, NY. Turkey quantities are limited, so please place your order soon and no later than 7 p.m. on November 14th, 2018. Follow this link to the online form to submit your order and $30 deposit. It doesn’t get much easier than this, and what an incredible way to get healthy, delicious farm fresh food for your Thanksgiving Dinner this year with just a simple click of a button! For more additional information about what Catskills Regional Harvest has to offer this holiday season, you can contact them by phone at 607-427-9848, or visit their website.

If you are in the area and ready to shop for those incredible ingredients that will make your meal simply perfect, we highly recommend you stop at the farm stands and farm stores in the area that are selling farm fresh products all year long. We highly recommend The Lucky Dog Farm Store (35706 State Highway 10, Hamden, New York) and Good Cheap Food (53 Main Street, Delhi, New York) in addition to the great resources above.
