From Belleayre, Turn Left
Just on the other side of the border of Delaware County is Belleayre Ski Mountain in Highmount, home to over 50 skiing, snowboarding and hiking trails with breathtaking views of the surrounding Catskill mountains, and New York’s first ever chair lift. After a long day of skiing at Belleayre, we encourage you to TURN LEFT when you leave the resort to explore the restaurants, attractions and lodgings in the delightful towns along Route 28 in Delaware County.
Discover a world of dining, shopping, attractions and night life from Fleischmanns to Delhi, just a 5 to 30 minute drive from the Belleayre entrance. Consider staying overnight in one of these charming towns, where bed & breakfasts, boutique hotels and full-service resorts can be tucked onto a picturesque hillside or conveniently situated on main street. The denser crowds and higher prices typical of Ulster County make a stay in Delaware County a much more peaceful and affordable getaway without sacrificing style, quality or comfort. Check out area favorites like Spillian, Breezy Hill Inn or Margaretville Mountain Inn Village Suites, all of which are just a short drive from the slopes.
If you’re in need of some wine and spirits, E & D Spirit Shop in Arkville, Wild Common Wine in Andes, and Strickland Hollow Bottle Shop & Tasting Room in Delhi provide tons of options, from budget-friendly to high-end rarities. If the sweet stuff and coffee is what you need, check out the delicious offerings of Cafe Marguerite in Margaretville.
After a long day of skiing, preparing your own food and drink might be the last thing you want to do. Local dining options are plentiful, including brick oven pizza at Oakley’s, the famous schnitzel at Binnekill Tavern, or the handmade pastas at Trattoria Locale. For a deliciously elevated beverage, continue along Route 28 to Wayside Cider in Andes, or Hollow in Delhi, both of which also have fantastic dinner menus in a romantic ambiance.
For all you ski enthusiasts, check out two ski slopes in one trip with a visit to Plattekill Mountain. Less than 30 minutes up Route 30 in Roxbury you’ll find a completely different vibe at this fiercely independent, family-run ski mecca. With wild woodland trails, tons of winter events and live music every Saturday night, it definitely beckons a visit. For those who might prefer aprés ski (or no ski at all), there is a wide array of terrific outdoor activities (like a wintry hike with the Catskill Mountain Club) and indoor attractions (like a bowling or antiquing).
Whatever way you winter, we can’t recommend enough that you TURN LEFT.
